Halifax are conducting an innovative experiment in smart home technology and the Internet of Things, to enhance the proposition to their home insurance customers. This involves the development of a novel app, to help customers manage their key home insurance risks including fire, water and theft.
To develop this technology, the Halifax Insurance Innovation team has partnered with 3 innovative startups: Surely, a leading InsurTech in digital insurance, to build the overall app; Fing, to provide their industry-leading scanning software enabling the app to scan and connect with wifi-enabled devices in the home; and HomeServe Labs, whose LeakBot will be used for water leak detection. The app will also integrate with sensors including Samsung SmartThings for presence and entry detection, and Fibaro for fire detection. Customers will be alerted to relevant changes in the sensors, as well as useful external data sources pertinent to their home protection (e.g. extreme weather warnings). Customers will also be able to keep track of their home contents room by room.
Derek Smith, Head of Innovation at Halifax’s Insurance Division, said: “We are excited to have built and launched this highly novel app, which is now being trialled with a select group of users. Our General Insurance division is the UK’s third largest general insurance provider, and 3.2 million customers protect their homes and valuables with us, so we are constantly working on ways to enhance our offering to them. We have enjoyed working with the teams at Surely, Fing and HomeServe Labs on this pilot project, and have been impressed by what has been achieved already in a short time period.”
